uMthombo Street Children
uMthombo supports children & youth who are street-connected or at-risk in eThekwini Metro towards alternatives: family reintegration (45 reintegrated, 2017), or supporting them develop resilience and/or skills for independent living. There are no quick- fixes, but children’s lives can be transformed. 5 strategies: Outreach- to children & youth on Durban’s streets (boys & increasingly girls) thru sports and arts, & if needed, refer to appropriate professional care; Psycho-social interventions for healing, resilience & re-integration; Targeted Development Interventions tailored to specific needs of girls & young women, boys or young men - to build resilience, & where possible, build independent, integrated lives. Prevention Interventions with at-risk children & youth in surrounding townships; building community safety networks for at-risk children & youth. Advocacy-for effective implementation of SA children’s policies & acceptance that all children are adults'responsibility.
